Mounting plug-in solar: balconies, railings, walls, fences and flat roofs

The specification bans the obvious shortcuts by name — no cable ties, rope, tape, bungee cords or straps — and requires the manufacturer to state where their system may not be installed. Read that statement before you buy, because it decides whether your balcony is a candidate at all.

The specification bans the shortcuts by name. Mounting arrangements relying solely on “cable ties, rope, string, adhesive tape, bungee cords, straps” are not permitted.

A compliant kit comes with a mounting system, and the manufacturer must define which configurations and environments it is for — “including any surfaces, materials or locations on which installation is not permitted”.

That manufacturer statement is the document that decides whether your balcony, fence or wall is a candidate. Read it before buying, not after.

What the specification requires of the manufacturer

Five duties, and each is something you can check on the product literature.

Supply a mounting system as part of a complete kit, according to the customer’s mounting requirements.

Provide a complete specification of that system, component by component, with a structural analysis demonstrating it is safe for its intended use.

Define the intended configurations and environments — and, critically, any surfaces, materials or locations where installation is not permitted.

Specify minimum clearances: between the module and the mounting surface, and between the module and adjacent materials or obstructions, “to ensure adequate ventilation and minimise heat accumulation and minimise fire risk”. Where necessary for ventilation, they must specify that modules are mounted at an angle to the surface.

Demonstrate the loads, by structural analysis, for all intended configurations — wind and snow, under UK conditions, determined in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-3 and BS EN 1991-1-4 and their UK National Annexes.

The manufacturer defines the limits, not the retailer

The government’s response to consultation makes the logic explicit: the IPS does not require every product to be designed for the highest snow loading in the UK. Instead manufacturers define the intended installation conditions, including wind and snow limitations, and corrosion requirements apply only where a product is marketed for corrosive environments.

So “is this suitable for a coastal balcony?” is a question about the specific product, and the answer is in its documentation. A retailer’s listing is not that documentation.

By mounting location

Balcony railings. The archetypal configuration, and the one with the most constraints. Beyond the mounting specification, you have the fire safety position — which is significant on balconies and decisive on some buildings — and the freeholder’s consent under your lease.

Walls. Ventilation clearance is the issue: a module pressed flat against a wall is exactly what the clearance requirement exists to prevent. Note also that in a conservation area or World Heritage Site, permitted development does not allow installation on a wall which fronts a highway — see conservation areas — and that elsewhere a wall installation must stay within 0.2 metres of the wall plane.

Fences. Attractive because they avoid the building entirely, and limited by what the fence can carry. A domestic fence is not a structural element and wind load on a module is considerable. The manufacturer’s structural analysis has to cover the configuration; the fence’s own adequacy is your problem.

Ground and free-standing frames. Often the simplest answer, particularly for park homes and rented properties, because it touches no building at all.

Flat roofs and garage roofs. Possible where the structure allows and the manufacturer permits the configuration. Access, ballast weight and wind uplift all matter, as they do for rooftop flat installations.

Why the prohibited-fixings list exists

Cable ties, rope, tape, bungee cords and straps all degrade — in ultraviolet light, in frost, in repeated loading. They are also exactly what a person improvises with when a kit arrives without a proper mounting system.

The module is glass and aluminium, typically a couple of square metres, mounted at height on a structure over a public or shared space. The specification is not being fussy.

Questions to ask before buying

  1. What mounting configurations does the manufacturer permit for this product?
  2. Which surfaces or locations does the specification exclude?
  3. What is the minimum clearance from the mounting surface, and does the product need to be angled?
  4. What wind and snow loading is the mounting system rated for, and does that cover my site?
  5. Is the structural analysis available, and what configurations does it cover?
  6. Is corrosion resistance specified, if I am near the coast?
  7. What does my lease say, and what does the building’s fire risk assessment say?

A compliant product will have answers to one through six in its documentation. If a seller cannot point you at them, that itself answers the question about the product.
