About solar

We are an independent information service covering solar energy in the UK. We do not sell solar, we do not install it, and we do not pass your details to anyone who does.

Who we are

solar is an independent information service providing free guidance on solar energy in the UK.

We are not an installer. We are not a broker or a comparison site. We do not fit, sell, finance or arrange anything, and we do not pass your details to anyone who does.

What we do

We publish:

  • clear explanations of how solar works and what it costs
  • independent calculators that run in your browser and send us nothing
  • maintained, dated data on export tariffs, grants and schemes
  • guidance on choosing an installer, and on what to do when something goes wrong

We are not installers

Our guidance is for information only. Every property, roof and household is different, and nothing here is a substitute for a survey of your actual building. For advice on your specific situation, get quotes from MCS-certified installers — and read our guidance on how to compare them before you do.

Our principles

Independent. We have no commercial relationship with any installer, manufacturer, energy supplier or finance provider.

Accurate. Every figure we publish is sourced and dated. Where sources conflict, we publish the conflict rather than picking one and presenting it as settled.

Accessible. Plain English, designed to work for everyone, including people using assistive technology.

Up to date. We track policy, tariff and price changes and update promptly, and every page tells you when it was last checked.

Transparent. Our methodology and our sources are published in full, and our corrections are public.

How we are funded

We have no commercial relationships with installers, manufacturers, energy suppliers or finance providers. We run no affiliate links, no lead generation, no sponsored content and no paid placement. Nobody pays to appear on this site and nobody pays to be recommended.

Where we introduce a service that readers pay for directly, we will say so plainly on the page, and it will never affect what we publish about anyone.

We are not government affiliated

solar.org.uk is not connected to, endorsed by, or funded by the UK government, any government department, or any official scheme.

We do not administer grants, we cannot process applications, and we have no influence over whether you qualify for anything.

If a website, phone call or doorstep caller claims to represent “the government scheme”, or offers you “free government solar panels”, treat it with caution. Genuine schemes are listed on GOV.UK, and no legitimate government scheme will cold-call you.

Why there are no bylines

We publish as an organisation rather than under individual names. Our authority comes from published methodology, primary sources on every claim, and a public corrections log — not from a photograph and a job title.

Feedback and corrections

If you think something here is wrong, tell us. Corrections are the fastest way to make this site better, and we log them publicly rather than editing quietly.
